Biography

Backstory

Koi was born in the Sage City, the child of Gerron and Josha Ana'koi. He went to the Apex of Innovation, an elite artificer academy taught by Magistrate Bolt. Here he befriended his classmates including Aldin Thorin, Zofia Atmos, Derevi, and Aronil Shimmerene. After studying the void, he also developed two apex innovations while at the school, the Deadfall Tether and Void Link Inciter. Koi would continue to work at the Apex with Bolt for well over a decade.

The Skaad

Koi was contacted by Magistrate Bolt and met with him and Inquisitor Nale at the Inquisitor's Hall in Shanlume, where he met Krauss Fortice. The two of them would travel to Undaris to oversee the safety of the prisoners at Commander Romulus' camp being moved to the Mines of Rot and investigate the missing supply shipment. The prisoners were successfully transported, but the next morning Koi and Krauss found that Lieutenant Dust was a traitor and soon after the camp was attacked. Olyver Embers and Sira escaped in the chaos. Koi, Krauss, and Romulus took the remaining prisoners (The Red Blade, Veteneris, and Dust (who would die on the way)) to the southern camp, where the remnants of the Boogeypeople were being retrained.

Koi and Krauss joined with the survivors of the southern camp, which was also attacked. After hearing that they saw Aldin and Zofia as their enemies (to varying degrees), Koi decided to stick with the party. They began by investigating Inquisitor Orin's room in the Inquisitor's Hall. There they found the body of the actual Inquisitor Orin and his journal about Ranolan Eluxiam taking the throne and the Burning Umbra, which Koi realized was connected to the judge Phelorna. After this, the party went to the Hall's library to learn more. Here V'ark found a book of madness, which should be kept in the Vault of Madness and accessible only to inquisitors Rya and Certis. The next day the party was joined by Rya, Nale, and Bolt and descended to the Vault, only to find it was being broken into by Maverick Moonveil and the Cobalt Brotherhood. They followed the tunnels left from the intruders and found they came from a fortress in the underdark that the Colbalt Brotherhood had taken over. Nearby, the party was offered respite from a gold dragon inkeeper named Glitz who once ruled that fortress and wanted to retake it. After resting, the party and Glitz disguised themselves and infiltrated the castle. They cleared out the vault, retrieving three of the books and several magic items including The Siphon which Koi would later use. Koi sabotaged a teleporation circle where copies of cursed pages of a book stolen from the Vault were being sent to Shanlume and Quelxiros. The party regrouped and teleported out and back to Shanlume, only hours before the Inquisitor's Hall exploded.

Equipment

  • Void Link Inciter and Deadfall Tether - Created by Koi at the Apex of Innovation, replacing his missing right arm. Draws energy from the void and uses it to cast spells, make attacks, and create momentary links to the void.
  • Particle Rings - Given to Koi by their inventor, Magistrate Bolt. Creates a linked pair of portals in nearby surfaces.
  • The Siphon - Taken from the vault of Castle Benevolence. A dagger that can cause bleeding, siphon blood, track people, change form, and create blood puppets.
  • Alchemy Jug - Primarily used to make coffee in the morning.
  • Sending Stone - Given to Koi by Inquisitor Nale. Used for communication.

Koi in other timelines

Koi-281

Koi-281 was an artificer/wizard and member of an alternate version of the Skaad, in a timeline where Glitch acquired the god-killing weapon and jumped into the pit before the Skaad could kill him. They followed him into the pit, went unconscious, and Koi, Dirk, and Theren woke up in another world. Here they found the city of Xitalos, where blood elves practiced "crimson", "strand", and "star" magic. The three breathed in mists from a void fountain and transformed into void form, with Koi's arm transforming into black and purple crystal and pink swirling energy. They tracked down Glitch and found he was killing Solinari with the weapon. The party killed Glitch and Koi took the god-killing weapon to study.

Koi-23196

Koi-23196 was an artificer/wizard and member of an adventuring party known as The Scud that mirrored the Skaad, but failed in stopping one of the threats facing the world. Through unknown circumstances, this Koi would end up destroying his own universe. This made him a target of the Grand Donjon, but he was instead brought to Redemption where he met Reynnian. After the two met some of the leadership of Desolate and learned more about the situation with the Donjon, they were assigned to kill the entity known as The Caretaker, but instead chose to free it. As thanks it teleported them to a far-off world in its home timeline, where the duo met Rimmerene who told them more about the early days of the Donjon.

Koi-209139

Koi-209139 was an artificer/barbarian and member of an adventuring party known as Remember Death that somewhat mirrored Memento Mori, with Koi taking the place of Lamni Armorpha. The party all died after an attack by a plasma dragon, and woke up in the Stranded Realm. Here they saw a beam of red light but tried to avoid it, instead regrouping and heading toward a giant tree. There they saw the red light return with an army of constructs that were building a portal. When the portal was completed, Remember Death all ran into it to wherever it lead.

Other timelines

Another Koi, instead going by his first name Quastor, was also part of the Saviors of Undaris, V'ark's adventuring party in his original timeline. Quastor was destroyed when V'ark brought about the destruction of his universe.

Another Koi existed in the timeline of Miracle Menagerie. He was retired as an adventurer and instead served as the Artificer Supreme of Cardinal's Reach, based out of his study in Cirezel. His mind was addled but he had expert control over void magic.
