Jordun Brunhilde is a Mountain Dwarf and a member of the Forsaken. He is one of the antagonists of Part 3.
Appearance
Jordun is relatively tall for a dwarf, standing at 160 cm. His notable traits being a pronounced beer gut even for his people, muddy brown to graying short hair, a stubble rather than a beard, and oatmeal brown eyes. He's often wearing brown clothes that resemble a parody of a tunic and has a noticeable hook nose.
Personality
Known for his tall tales and exaggerations to the point of being considered a compulsive liar, it can be hard to tell when Jordun is serious about his past and which is the truth, often with the outlandish being more plausible than the fictitious. This can make him either an entertaining guest to listen to, able to talk for hours on end with tale after tale, or an utter annoyance who can ramble on without getting to the point, testing one's patience. Despite this, he can show signs of intent and cunning, able to put on a show of loyalty.
Due to his stature as taller than most dwarves, it wasn't uncommon for Jordun to be mistaken for a midget or a manlet, especially due to his trim shave, this was something he took full advantage of when negotiating other dwarves or halflings, making them lower their guard in thinking they were speaking to another smug human before he picked apart their minds. In his past, he was a well known womanizer as well, flirting with most women with tales of heroics.
When first meeting, it would be easy to get along with Jordun as he would prattle on, but aware when he should be quiet. Despite seeming jovial, Jordun is more apathetic and nihilistic than he lets on, sometimes going with the flow while viewing everything as finite, from lives to the planet. This is a major contrast from his old self, likely caused from the loss of his wife. He is also one of the few members of the Forsaken with hints of morality, begging Ivar to let Clymene go rather than kill her while also showing regret at her suffering.
While loyal, he can seem fearful of those with power, a major contrast from his old self. Clymene used to consider him a fun man whereas Atalanta would have once described him as a good friend and a man with morals.
Backstory
HEAVY SPOILERS. WILL BE UPDATED SOON
Equipment
Titanstone Gauntlets: Jordun maintains powerful gauntlets to improve his strength
Powers and Abilities
Dwarven Physiology: As a dwarf, Jordun is resilient to poisons
Longevity: Like all dwarves, Jordun can live for centuries
Martial Arts: While rusty compared to how he used to be, Jordun is a capable hand to hand fighter, mastering the Open Hand style. He prefers fighting unarmed and would show mastery in disabling joints from angles he was nowhere near or causing internal injuries with simple strikes. His style is based more from classical karate, sanchin, pressure points, and open palm techniques
Dirty Tactics: Despite his training, Jordun isn’t above using unusual methods, smashing a man’s head with his own body weight for example
Seductive Sauve?: Jordun has claimed to have bed several women, including a dragon. This is highly… highly debated and considered unreliable despite his claims
Relationships
Aphoelle: Of all the Forsaken, Aphoelle’s the closest he may consider a friend - even though their first meeting included him using her to incite a riot and she tried to get him killed as payback.
--"Aphoelle reminds me of my wife in a way. Well, not as tough maybe. Albeit, just how we met. Both times I hoisted and used them to cause riots. Haha... I hope she can join. I can use the company."
Atalanta: - An old friend to the Wood Elf, Jordun and Atalanta go way back. This reason is enough for him to give her and Chiron sanctuary in the dwarvan realms of Krakenrock.
--"Did Atalanta ever get that redwood tree out of her ass? Ah, who am I kidding? It got stuck so deep she became the tree. Still, she used to be hard on herself, but more open. It hurts seeing her paralyzed in that damn chair. It hurts more seeing her struggle so hard even when knowing shes outmatched. I see where Clem gets her determination from... then again, Clem knows when to fold them."
Clymene: The daughter to his friend, Jordun was an uncle figure to the young elf, filling her head with stories of his exploits. While Clymene looked up to him, he viewed her as an innocent flower - one that the world always chews up and spits out to leave for dust. He greatly cared for her, and when the Forsaken cornered her, pleaded for her to be left alive.
--"Fucking... I used to hold this girl in my lap. Seeing her turn into a damn gnome and die twice. Seeing everything she endured... I shouldn't have filled her head with stories of adventures and mercenary work. If she can just quit, then I'd feel better."
Hildr Firebrand: - Like anyone with half a brain, Jordun avoids Hildr. She really doesn't like him.
--"Hey, I didn't tell her to join a cult over her daddy issues."
--"These are the people Clem joined? A smartass, 'well akctually'-looing, and flamboyant half-elf who would get shanked before a single day in prison, an easily angered, romance obsessed furry, a high elf who thinks shes tough shit just because her village got burnt down, a circus brat, some demon spawn, and- okay, the druid seems pretty chill. I've seen power. And these idiots, and their circle of toy soldiers like that defective orc, Ms. Daddy Issues, and overly passive hunk of scrap metal... they better be good."
Plot
After being recruited by the Forsaken, Jordun would serve as a gopher, often used as the middleman to communicate with other groups like the Carta Cartel and William Harper. At some point, he would make contact with Tuunbaq and assist in giving her the equipment to overthrow Yulyu's elders and slaughter them. Despite all this, he managed to help Atalanta and Chiron escape, only barely as Whisper alerts him and warns that she's only letting this occur out of interest rather than actual care.
Sometime afterwards, Jordun would be used to lure Craig Firebrand to a trap, bringing Clymene along akin to a bonus. The resulting attack caused by the Forsaken would traumatize the gnome as they incapacitate the two members of Croak and Dagger, with Jordun pleading Ivar to let Clymene go. Shortly afterwards, a caravan he would travel with would be intercepted by the full might of the heroes - and him being captured after a single blow from Hildr. Imprisoned, the dwarf would be subjected to interrogation from Raiah, who would use magic to create a convincing illusion of Freya. Watching and hearing his daughter get hacked open while the heroes do nothing would be the only thing that makes him crack, reducing him to a sobbing wreck to the site - especially once Raiah slits the dwarven woman's throat.
With all the information he could give out in the open, Croak and Dagger would speak to him, with Clymene demanding to understand why he would willingly join the Forsaken. The resulting argument would nearly send the girl into despair when he would nearly confirm all her fears and insecurities of not being cared for by her own mother - the only one she tries to impress, and by her friends. With Aiden sensing how it would end with either Clymene trying to kill him or lose her own mind, he would comfort her while Maribelle sees through his ruse as a case of trying to keep her pushed away. Andol would retaliate by using his ability of mental unison to force Jordun to see and feel each injury Clymene suffered, this being close to breaking him as the gnome regained herself.
When offered a chance to make things right and join - albeit as a prisoner, kept safe and out of the Forsaken's radar, but lacking certain freedoms, Jordun would only be convinced by Aileen Locket. His only demand in return? Knowing that his daughter will be safe.
After rescuing Craig, Clymene would visit the dwarf again, hoping to speak and convince him to join Croak and Dagger, to turn his life around. Instead of a heartful session, Jordun laughed and railed into the gnome, reminding and telling her how she has been nothing but a hindrance and how she does nothing but hide behind her team and leave unfulfilled promises. Unable to respond, Clymene tried her best to make a case for herself, only to be reminded how she was a failure to Atalanta, to the team, and a coward. The words became one of the final nails to convince Clymene to try and prove herself, on top of Aileen's 3 day time limit, to try and fulfill at least one promise and to protect someone. Jordun would soon be visited by Aiden and Omerok, who wished to interrogate him and show him her letter to see if he truly cared. Upon learning of Clymene's plan, Jordun merely said it was a good thing, as either result would be what the Forsaken would want. He then tells the duo that he was at the village not for Tuunbaq, but for Atalanta, who was a part of the Forsaken.
Trivia
- Jordun’s primary themes are Honest Eyes by Black Tide, Knock Me Down by KATAMALI, and Ain't No Rest for the Wicked by Cage the Elephant
- His primary fighting style is based off Baguazhang.
- Jordun was originally going to use the Monk subclass of Way of Long Death. Open Palm was selected instead due to time and preference that it would hint at him being softer than he lets on
- Due to his history with Atalanta, working alongside her in missions, as well as Clymene being shorter than the average Wood Elf, it was rumored that Jordun and Atalanta spent more time "arrow polishing" than believed.
- Jordun's favorite food was poutine and Atalanta's fried fish.
- Jordun loves detective novels. He actively despises romance novels because they remind him of his wife and made him too depressed to read
- Jordun rarely, if ever, touches upon his past - mostly because he hates remembering it, preferring his tall tales or remembering his days as an adventurer. It's likely not even the Forsaken know his true past - although his claims of bedding a dragon and being known as the Dragon Layer is dubiously possible
- Originally, Jordun's (now deceased) wife's name was to be Ymir. This was a leftover from an original work and was made before the introduction of the Goliath Ymir. Her revamped name is either Skadi or Sif to keep in theme of Norse mythos. Despite this, Jordun's name was created without Norse mythos in mind
