Death Knights is a group of lawful assassins that take lucrative contracts of murder. While they are in the business of murder, they only kill through contracts, and never kill if there is no reason to. Each contract is carefully analyzed to ensure that there is a good reason why a person should be killed.

The organization often operates in old abandoned sewers, crypts, and hidden underground locations, far from the eyes of society. Most people go about their business without any inclination that a Death Knight guild hall might be right beneath their feet.

The guild often employs clerics who worship gods of death, such as Kelemvor, The Raven Queen, and Shar, in extreme cases. Many assassins within the guild say a brief prayer to one of these gods to ensure this soul is safely transitioned to the afterlife, even though they are suffering a quick death in real life. Assassins, by guild rules, are not allowed to enjoy a kill, and must do it swiftly. A victim should not suffer, and should be killed and silenced as quickly as possible.

Leaders within the guild are called Silencers, or Executioners, as they believe that they are the closest to death through all the contracts that they have completed over their career. The guild is inherently high self-destructive in their beliefs, as members are expected to throw away all forms of self-worth and become cold, emotionless assassins. Many individuals who had no ties to the real world often turn to this life, as they have no other options. The guild does not recruit, as it believes those who are worthy and dedicated come and seek the guild out themselves.
