Appearance

Hakim is a medium-height, tan-skinned native of Sheng-Lao with dark green eyes and his hair tied up into a bun. A strict diet and workout regiment have turned Hakim's body into something cut out of stone.

Backstory

Voodoo Child

Hakim is the youngest of three grandchildren to Taijin Monastery founder and civil rights activist, Rykozuma Taijin. When Hakim's parents had left him and his sisters, they were relocated to live with their grandfather. It was at the Taijin Monastery that Hakim attempted to find some semblance of peace and belonging, but often struggled to; often fighting, pranking, and being an all-around nuisance to those around him. Hakim believed he was destined to be more like his father than anything and fell hard into the same substance abuse his father did. It was his self-destructive tendencies and rebellious behavior that earned Hakim the nick Voodoo Child from his grandfather's peers. Especially from the Yoshida family.

Hakim's life came to a head when Hiro Yoshida, longtime critic and bully of Hakim, passed a law that forbade the possession and use of a number of illicit drugs. The passing of this policy happened to occur the same day that Hakim was caught with powdered, yellow Locust Dust. Hakim's arrest and the timing of the passing of the policy meant that Hakim was banished from Sheng-Lao. Hakim, and his wife Tuunbaaq, left Sheng-Lao never to be seen again until the Sheng-Lao Riot of 1731. When Ryko passed away four years later, Hakim and Tuunbaaq were not allowed to return for his funeral.

Brighter than the Sun

When Tuunbaaq was discharged and returned to Sheng-Lao disgraced and homeless, she was given residence at the Taijin Monastery by Ryko. It was there that she often butted heads with Hakim. His lack of discipline and childish behavior irritated Tuunbaaq who was between manic bouts of depression at the time. But over time they found some semblance of a relationship in their differences. Their shared cigarettes under the moonlight turned into sneaking out into Wei-Tao, then into romantic dinners, and eventually marriage. Tuunbaaq taught Hakim how to take responsibility for himself, while he smoothed out Tuunbaaq's rough edges. Together, they saw the injustices that plague Sheng-Lao, and the Alliance, and would go on to found the Fireflies. Uttering an old adage that Ryko would read to Hakim when he was younger, "Those in darkness, need only look for the light."

Relationships

Andol "I am so glad I met him when I did. I did not have many friends when we first arrived. Making a friend over something as simple as cake. Andol is a good man. That is all. A good man and a great friend. I know we did not have the best of interactions with his friends at first. But I do not see why we can not begin to bridge that gap with someone like Andol representing them."

Clymene "I understand the desperation to cling to and salvage the remains of what was. I also understand the lengths someone will go to, to do so. So… no I do not harbor any ill feelings towards Clymene. I was angry. Frustrated. But, it is not my job to fix people. I can only see their side of things. It does not mean I would not have reacted appropriately should she have continued her… war?… with my wife. I invite the young archer to one of my circles some time."

Hiro "I hope that every child you’ve locked in a cage, every native you displaced, every family you broke up, comes back to haunt you. I hope you feel their hands on your throat in your sleep just as I feel yours. I hope I find you at my door, begging me for help. For peace. So that I may stuff your face in the dirt and watch YOU choke for once.."

Somchai and Subin "When my grandfather died and I was banished, my sisters bare the full weight of the monastery on their shoulders. I wish I could have been there. I wish I could tell them how proud I am. For all the grief we gave each other growing up, I always wanted to be more like my sisters."

Tuunbaaq "'She is my best friend. What? Don’t laugh, it’s true! Imagine getting to be with someone that chooses you despite all of your vices and insecurities. Someone who knows how you like your dumplings boiled a little underdone and your tea with cream. Who knows your every thought behind everyday nothings and conversations. That is my wife. Not many people see the side of her that I do, and even less try to. I know what people see when they see my wife. And they are wrong."
