By the time he meets Croak and Dagger, Edgar has a tightly kept military fade and squared-away five o’clock shadow silvered with grey hair. Edgar is a no non-sense soldier, keeping to a strict diet and workout regiment that even at 40 keeps him in fighting shape. Not one for standing out, Edgar carries himself confident and humble. Backstory

The Castille Boys

Edgar and his younger brother Samson grew up on an isolated community farm on the outskirts of Oakvale. With only 5 gold to their name and the clothes on their back, the brothers hitchhiked to Meadowcraft where they dreamt of owning land. Upon arrival, the brothers were thrust into the overwhelming hustle and bustle of the city and all its amenities. Unfamiliar with city life, the brothers stumbled around staying with family friends while working odd jobs to keep themselves afloat. It would be a year of hard labor before the brothers would join the armed service with promises of free school and travel.

An Officer and a Lady

Edgar and Samson’s experience as city guards was anything but glamorous. The government would only pay for their education after six years of service, and the only traveling they did was at night between bars of puking customers. But Edgar did his duty, and within a year and he Samson moved through the ranks until they were patrolling the capital steps. It was during this time that Edgar met Princess Cassandra Bullmore in a rather embarrassing manner. Lady Cassandra had accidentally spat on Edgar from afar whilst showing off to her friend. What ensued was a short chase with Edgar, not knowing it was the princess, insulting and chastising her. If it weren’t for Cassandra’s mercy, Edgar would have been cleaning latrines at the barracks for the remainder of his service. The two would meet at the same spot for weeks, speaking to their own experiences of being a lady with a title, and a young man with nothing truly to his name.

The Joust

Against all instincts and sound advice from Samson, Edgar challenged his superior, Lieutenant-Captain Loghain Bradley to a joust for Lady Cassandra’s hand. Loghain and Cassandra were set to be wed for the political and monetary benefits both families could provide to one another. Not a knight, Edgar’s challenge was mocked. It wasn’t until the Rose Queen grew tired of the insistent annoyance before her, that she ordered Loghain to run him into the dirt in a formal joust for Cassandra’s hand. To everyone’s surprise, Edgar had run the joust into a 2-2 contest. On the third and final relay, falling victim to Loghain’s taunts, Edgar threw the contest and broke his arm in the process. As per their bet, Edgar was forbidden from ever showing his face in Meadowcraft again.

The Rangers of Oakvale

While drinking his new sorrows away, Edgar was approached by recently unemployed stablehand, Craig Firebrand. The fast-talking, mildly obnoxious Halfling, sold Edgar on a life of fame and gold. While gold was the furthest thing from Edgar’s mind, he believed if he could bring honor back to his name, he could return to Meadowcraft. Edgar was the face of the party, the story of a farm boy turned disgraced knight. Craig said it was an image that would sell. And sell it did. Edgar would lead the Rangers of Oakvale into every adventuring book from Meadowcraft to Krakenrock. Tales of their heroism and he standard for future adventuring parties. Until the Sankofa Accord.

No More Heroes

After the incident at the city of Sankofa, the character of every adventuring party was called into question. Edgar was forced to take a step back and look at the past few years. Had every choice been made selflessly? Were lives needlessly put in danger? Did they fight because it was right, or because it paid? The celebrity lifestyle of adventuring parties was pulled into the spotlight, and Edgar was called to Meadowcraft to speak. Thousands stood in and around the courtroom to see the Lion himself speak. They always did. And, to the dismay and surprise of his friends, Edgar said adventuring parties were dangerous. The lifestyles they lived and principles they followed were dangerous. It was all the Alliance needed to outlaw all adventuring parties. This decision earned Edgar a place beside the new human King as his aide, and created a permanent rift between Edgar and Craig.

The Bloody Seven

Edgar was one of many prominent commanders fighting for the Alliance during the Seven Year War. Edgar saw victory at every battle with his grizzled unit, the 33rd. His first, and only defeat came at the Battle of Jyorkstead against Ygrid Ironborn. Out of the jaws of defeat, Ygrid had summoned a devastating ambush with the aide of the Drow and Warforged. Edgar’s confidence, and lack of military intelligence, cost him the battle. And quite possibly the war. Ygrid had let Edgar and his men go, but only until the human King had withdrawn. Which he did, for Edgar’s sake. The feeling that his failure to see the Goliath’s plan had cost the Alliance the war, sat with Edgar for years to come.

The Castille Family

After all the adventuring, fighting, ass-kissing, and parades, Edgar had built a family with Cassandra who had given up her right to the throne leaving her mother to surrender it to the current King, just an advisor before then. Edgar had bought two modest estates within the city, one for him and Cassandra, and another for Samson and his wife, Camilla. While Edgar had been off living the adventuring life of a knight, Samson had done well for himself in politics. With Edgar in the military and Samson in the political arena, the Castille family had amassed quite the reputation, and surplus of wealth. Edgar and Cassandra had two sons, Matthew and Roland. Both young men followed in Edgar’s footsteps and became well known in the Meadowcraft military for their own heroic feats. On Samson’s side, the younger brother was blessed with a son of his own, Hugo. After all this time, Edgar and Samson had everything they could ever dream of. The thing about dreams, is they always end.

The Castille Curse

Within the span of a year, Edgar had lost both Cassandra and Matthew to terrible accidents. The following year, Samson was killed in a hunting accident. It seemed everyone who knew or associated with the Castilles had died. Edgar’s opponents cruelly called it the ‘Castille Curse’. But the thing about Edgar was, he could dig deep, and find hope even at his lowest. He would continue to serve and inspire for years to come, eventually bringing Roland up beside him as a commanding officer. A pride of lions is never more fierce than they are together. Lion’s pride.
