Human, AKA ‘Charlie’, ‘Smartass’
Appearance
Charles looks like he puts in the minimal amount of effort it takes to not look homeless. He has medium auburn hair that is hastily combed back with long sideburns. Charles rarely shaves since his experiments have all but singed any remnants of a beard or mustache. He has light green eyes that are always studying and deconstructing objects and artifacts around him. Despite his lankier build, Charles is very fit since he’s usually the one lugging his own supplies and tools around with him wherever he goes.
Backstory
Childhood
The middle child of the five Harper siblings, Charles grew up in a poverty-stricken family on the western-most boroughs of Meadowcraft. Charles's dad was a metalworker who worked overnight at the coal mines while his mother did laundry for the wealthier families. Charles's days were spent playing with his brothers and sisters, finding little joys throughout their day on the playground or window-shopping uptown. While his older brothers saw roles for themselves in the armed service or politics, Charles wanted to build things. One winter, when Charles's mother had stashed enough money from her job selling bouquets on the side, she bought Charles a puzzle box. It was little more than two hours when she returned to see he had finished it. At first, Charles's mother passed it off as him just getting lucky. So she bought him another, which he then solved in half the time it took to solve the first one. As Charles got older, he would take old junk off people's hands and bring them back to his cluttered side of the room. From faulty toys, cooking appliances, broken locks, or faulty hand crossbows from the blacksmith. If it had at any point in time, had cohesive, moving parts, Charles wanted it. Behind his watchful father's back, Charles would deconstruct and reconstruct objects around the house, just to see how they worked. His father was none the wiser.
Good Will Hunting
Charles got a part-time job working as a maintenance and janitorial clerk at the College of Meadowcraft. He had taken the job to help support his now struggling family when the Seven Year War began, and one of Charles's brothers had been called to serve. Charles swept the massive halls and classrooms at the end of every day, just the school mute keeping to himself. Sometimes Charles would show up early and relieve the morning janitor, then quietly clean in the background of classes while secretly listening in on lessons. Where most people were overloaded with advanced theories of magic and engineering, the information came slowly to Charles, thanks to what would later be called a form of low latent inhibition. Charles could process stimuli at a slower rate, and rather than see things clearly as black and white, he could notice the slightest changes and the cohesive semblance of an entire object. This paired with his stolen lessons would set Charles on a track to become one of the College's greatest teachers.
