"Nah, kid. They're not brave. You can't be brave if you're indestructible like them. If you can pop a magic potion, lift buildings, or throw fireballs around. It's every day people, like you and me, that are brave. Cause guess what? People like us fight anyway, knowing we might lose. That's brave."
Garrett Havelock was the first human enemy that Croak and Dagger encountered during their first adventure in the town of Oakvale. While traveling to Newton Tell's farm in Oakvale, Croak and Dagger encountered Garrett and his band of...bandits, on the road. Like bandits do, they demanded that Croak and Dagger pay a toll before passing. Croak and Dagger's first fight began. While Garrett held his own against Incineryn and K'jalis, the rest of his group fell one by one. Seeing that he was beaten and surrounded, Garrett pleaded for his life. He explained that he and his men were hired to shakedown Newton Tell for some gold but were attacked once they entered the farm. Garrett guided them through the orchard and when they encountered corrupted trees and strawmen, Garrett fought alongside them. When the curse on the orchard had been lifted and the cider made, Garrett was allowed to leave so long as he renounced his bandit ways. Which he did for a time.
Garrett took on a number of legal contract-work, acting as a bodyguard and bounty-hunter for hire. During this time, Garrett met Victor Salazaar. The story goes that the gnome that Garrett had been hired to protect, was a shady, small-time drug peddler that Victor had been hired to bring in. When an agreement as to the fate of the gnome couldn't be reached, Victor and Garrett began fighting. In the middle of the (very one-sided -Victor) fight, a third party had moved in to take separate bounties on the gnome, Victor, and Garrett each. The latter two threw the former to the mercy of the bounty-hunters chasing him, then fled east. They separated but annoyingly wound up bumping into each other contract after contract, until they eventually agreed to work as a team.
Croak and Dagger
Garrett ran into Croak and Dagger again when he and his partner, Victor Salazaar, had captured Bigby Bixton and intended on turning him in to the gangs he had wronged. With some careful persuading and promises of a bigger long-term payout, Garrett and Victor reluctantly handed Bigby over to Croak and Dagger. Their founder, Craig Firebrand ended up hiring Victor and Garrett long-term. Garrett remains one of two glorified doormen on the tavern's busiest nights. When dirty jobs need doing, or heads need to be cracked away from the public, Garrett and Victor are usually on the job.
Relationships
Aiden "He the kid complaining about not getting paid? Ain't his daddy Edgar Castille? Okay bud."
Clymene "Oh yeah, I remember her and the old crew. Man, I gave them a whole speech and everything like they ought to have been scared of us. That? That was some dumb shit and that's one me. They let me go the first time so I didn't see no reason why we couldn't make a deal with her and the new folks about Bigby the second time around."
Craig "Pay is good and I'm not looking over my shoulder every day. So yeah, I'd say me and Vic got it made right now. Craig's a cool guy and I'm not worried he's going to shank me in my cot. But this whole thing with the Forsaken has me thinking about asking for a raise. Or dental.."
Marilka "Haha...she reminds me of me when I was little! Yeah, so what she's got a mouth on her, you'd be like that too if you've been through half of what she's been through. She's a good kid, really smart too. What's that? Nah, she'll do fine. If the kid feels right about being a hero and all that, then let her. Kids end up being a lot wiser than some of the folks we've got running for office."
Victor "Yeah, yeah... I know Vic can be one moody motherfucker. But he's good people. Has always had my back ever since that business back in the swamp. We've been traveling together for... what... yeah, like two years now? Now I'm not going to try and pretend I understand all his weird choices in life, but that's not for me to judge. Vic's solid and if you go messing with him then you're going to be dealing with me. Probably after Vic puts you through a window and softens you up for me haha!"
