Summary

A half-orc paladin who hails from the distant lands. Initially an almost eccentric and silly gullible fellow, he reveals himself to be a compassionate and helpful fellow. Even if he believes himself far from perfect, he wishes nothing more than to save lives and to aid those in need. Though his approach to certain situations are questionable and has gotten him into trouble with the locals. Nevertheless he's still a Croak and Dagger member at heart, and would be one of the many heroes of the kingdom.

Surely nothing bad would happen to him at all!

Known as a kind but strange individual, Barbatos is a Paladin. Already he made his mark known by trying to swim through an ocean, or massive form of water, in an attempt to save up money reaching his destination. Screaming at someone only a few feet away from him, misunderstanding situations and treating a lighthearted joke as a serious offense, and somehow misunderstanding Greg as some sort of Potato man.

A strange Paladin truly, but there is something more to him.

Appearance and Personality

Background

As a half-human and half-orc, Barbatos was raised in an orcish tribe that was different from most. Though they are chaotic and certainly far from being truly good, this clan is attempting to make its way to becoming more integrated and allied with other races. A sense of honor and conduct ensures a proper relation with many alliances such as with elves, dwarves, tieflings, and humans. This alone wouldn’t cement their survival if they didn’t back up their ideology with their own strength and merit.

Thus it’s only natural for some to take interest in allying with the fearsome orcs that take a different approach. Hybrids like Barbatos are naturally born, and he is a son to a influential Paladin man and a powerful Orc Warrior woman. Their children were expected to be great and powerful warriors like many there and it indeed was true. Barbatos didn’t display talent but the will to overcome hardship and kept up with everyone.

But his lack of desire of becoming a Paladin and eagerness to spend the savings of his family was detrimental. No matter how powerful a warrior is, if they refuse to cooperate with everyone it’s no good. Even as a lone fighter he would be important but the young half-orc didn’t even desire that. It seems he also despises those of pure blood as he had a bad experience with them badmouthing his kind (Truthfully it was more of a tease), his gullibility, and lack of foresight alongside his race. That path of his rebellion begins there.

The expectations were smashed at this vicious and vice-filled vagrant and even his parents disowned him. His greed is too much out of all his sins and had actually become such an issue for him that he had resorted to stealing with his gang. For years this would continue as Barbatos stirs chaos, only working against invaders. Perhaps that was the only reason why no one truly went against him. Still, this was not to continue. It was an undesired outcome. If it were, the people might deem him and his fellow vagrants unnecessary and get rid of him. But that didn’t happen as the arrival of one bald and unnamed paladin arrived.

His gang of misfits was utterly beaten.

His body utterly broken.

His pride shattered.

And even as he tried his best to explain himself and all his wrongdoings, the monk simply pointed out everything he did wrong. To let his greed and lack of empathy be understood. His gang scattered to the wind, and with him shamed at his now epiphany, he gave himself up and wished to become better. The monk simply wished him luck and directed him back to his people.

And soon, the path to becoming a paladin begins anew.

Later years

Barbatos the benign now exists. Though he retains similar traits in the past such as a craving for money, lacking foresight, being a bit gullible, those are slowly being lost as he becomes more and more of a true Paladin. A better person. The strong desire to be the protector of the people and his oath of devotion ensured this path. Though his former gang was split on following his path and leaving him, it didn't matter. He simply acted as he please doing his best to save those he can aid.

Though, he wasn't fully recognized as a paladin yet due to his history, many would at least judge him as a better person. Certainly two women who he interacted with.

A few more years would come before he hears about the term Croak and Dagger and their recruitment.

Barbatos' Letters

Letter to Master

Remember when I told you I went to a strange world? Where there were creatures made out of metal moving and groaning around… Or how there was a moving contraption that made the dwarves happy? And the weird plant thing that made half our team very lax? It wasn’t all fun and games and I worry that things are getting dire. I wish to ask for your help if it’s alright. I know I haven’t been a faithful student and my change of oath might’ve disheartened you… But I feel like action must be performed to keep going.

At the rate things are, Meadowcraft is in danger. Everything is in danger. Our team is getting better and stronger.

Remember Clymene? She’s actually becoming more competent now. I have good faith that if she keeps up with not hitting me with wind wall, and keep her head cool and work with everyone, she’ll be fine.

Maribelle, sister of Incineryn, seems to be someone you’d like. She’s a good fighter and seemed like she has a good heart. She can hold her own and I hope she can protect everyone in case I’m gone.

Aiden looked like a sophisticated soul. Nice fellow and I hope he sticks around. I have a feeling he has shown little of what he can do, yet I can’t help but feel confident in his presence. As if safe. Though something unnerves me about him but I don't think that's something I should worry about.

Andol, the one I told you looking for Goar, is an intriguing man. A bit proud. But he’s good pal to have, magnificent I might add. I think his silver tongue would help everyone keep it together and just hope that he doesn’t end up in the maws of a crocodile again. I do hope he finds his god however.

And lastly, the best. Omerok. He’s the only one remaining with Clymene from our original group. We’ve gone through so much and survived a lot. He’s always kept a straight face and thought ahead. Keeping contingency plans and saving us from death and debt. He's probably the only one keeping us all together. Intact I mean. Physically intact.

They’ve all become so strong, that they might not even need me haha. I think I’ll visit there soon. There’s a party gathering tonight. I already told you that I’m confessing to Lilianne so I'm going to ask you for your help on that.

Letter to Aileen

I hope you’re still doing well and that Wojtek is doing better. Things aren’t exactly easy here. Too much death everywhere here, not just from the plague but many close people dying to me. I suppose life is more fleeting than I think of it and I can’t guarantee myself that I’ll be able to save everyone. People whom I care for and talk to disappear before I can say even a goodbye. Remember Incineryn? The one whom I wanted to have a heart to heart before I got the plague that turned me red? Can’t really make good goodbyes if they all want to suicide with a bang. I met her sister and she seems nice, but I don’t have much to say. There’s a lot of people that I work with yet I don’t feel like I talk to them enough. I have to change that soon.

That’s why I’ll prepare these in advance. Can you ask Boss about a god named Goar? I heard recently that Boss is visiting your hometown and since it’s always impossible for me to get his attention I need you to talk to him. He’s the only one I know who follows his Pantheon. If he’s not kicked out from it at least. There are rumors that this God might be in the Drow Territory in Conclave from Shiala herself. Her messages have always been blunt and ruthless, but I hope it helps. This piece of information might be outdated by the time it arrives to you. So take that into mind.

I’m also thinking of heading back there to visit. It’s been awhile since I met up with everyone. With the recent prophecy of what’s to come I feel like it’s necessary to do. Once things calm down a bit here I’ll head there. I have to talk to my old friends and check in with ma. I know she misses me and all. She keeps talking about how I need to get married and such so I might actually just retire soon once everyone here is fine. I’m thinking of confessing to Lilianne at the Smith. We still trade letter after all.

Oh, and if you drop by there, make sure Chubs isn’t eating too much. I can’t wait to come back to him. That big lovable fur monster of a dog has been waiting for me for so long

There was spilled maple syrup all over the letter.

Trivia

  • On his first appearance, his actions of trying swim across an ocean, screaming at someone in front of him, treating a lighthearted joke as a serious offense, and misunderstanding Craig as some sort of Potato man named Greg was made due to the expectations of the session being a comedic oneshot. Naturally that side of Barbatos is gone right now ever since it got serious.
    • It is now a headcanon that he always thought Craig's name was Greg
